As the bodyʼs largest organ, skin plays vital roles in maintaining the bodyʼs homeostasis and protecting it from external factors. Evaluations of skin conditions from a cosmetic perspective is also crucial. One key aspect of a skin evaluation is the assessment of wrinkles, which are fine patterns of unevenness in the skin. Distinguishing wrinkles in images of a patientʼs skin can be challenging, making accurate visualization difficult. To address this issue, we have developed an image-processing method that visualizes wrinkles by using two types of images: a regular image (referred to as the ʻnon-polarized imageʼ) and an image captured with a polarizing filter to remove the direct reflected light component (the ʻpolarized imageʼ), both taken with a dermo-camera (DZ-D100, CASIO). The features that differ between the non-polarized and polarized images are extracted, and the unevenness of background luminance caused by the skinʼs color is reduced; these steps achieve a more precise visualization of wrinkles. In addition, by analyzing the Gabor features of the final wrinkle-visualization images derived from Gabor filters that are sensitive to specific frequencies and orientations in the skinʼs texture, the new method enables the evaluation of patterns such as the spacing and directionality of wrinkles.
