Introduction: The treatment of an umbilical hernia in Japan is often performed in childhood, for cosmetic reasons. We describe a new umbilicoplasty technique that is designed to achieve a more natural umbilicus; the technique leaves no visible scar. The essence of this surgical method is the gathering of subcutaneous fatty tissue to make a deep umbilical depression.

Materials and Methods: Between February 2022 and March 2023, 23 patients 〔12 males, 11 females, age median age 5 years old (range 2-15)〕 with various forms of umbilical deformity underwent surgery that involved the new umbilicoplasty technique at single center. We retrospectively analyzed the patientsʼ outcomes and clinical courses, including complications of the treatment procedure.

Results: In all 23 cases, visible scarring was prevented outside the umbilicus and a natural, vertically-long and deep umbilical depression was formed with no postoperative complications.

Conclusion: Although further studies are merited, our present findings indicate that the new umbilicoplasty technique is a minimally invasive method for treating pediatric umbilical hernias, and we believe that this technique can be adapted to various umbilical deformities while leaving no visible scar.
