Complete decongestive therapy(CDT)is essential to the treatment of lymphedema. It is a biphasic treatment, with reduction and maintenance phases. The reduction treatment involves compression therapy, manual lymph drainage, and remedial exercise. A lymphaticovenular anastomosis(LVA)is a procedure that can extend the residual lymphatic drainage function by diverting excess lymph to the venous circulation. Given the boosted lymphatic drainage function after an LVA, perioperative reduction treatment(PORT)can enhance the outcome of the treatment by increasing the lymphatic flow. Early detection and intervention are also of paramount importance for a better prognosis of individuals with lymphedema. In this article, we discuss how to maximize the benefit of LVA with PORT.
