Palliative medicine aims to alleviate total pain and improve the quality of life(QOL)of patients not only through the cooperation of physicians and nurses, but also psychiatrists, pharmacists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, clinical psychologists, social workers, and other professionals, by adjusting not only the physical symptoms but also the psychological aspects and overall living environment. The goal is to reduce total pain and improve the QOL. However, the control of total pain remains a major challenge, and although advances in analgesics have broadened the range of pain that can be managed, it is not always possible to control pain by itself, and patients benefit from treatment options other than analgesics. Interventional radiology(IR)offers a wide range of treatment options, is minimally invasive, and can be performed under local anesthesia in many cases. The minimally invasive nature of IR may be a good match for the needs of palliative patients, who are often in the terminal stages of their disease. In this article, I introduce some IR techniques that are useful for pain control, showing clinical examples.
