【Purpose】Various factors such as the increase in the number of households where both partners are working have recently changed the child-rearing environment in Japan. This study aimed to clarify how the midwives in charge of maternal and child health in the community recognized the current state of child rearing by young parents, and discuss the problems of child-rearing support.

【Subjects and Methods】We used a qualitative descriptive design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 midwives who took an active part in the field of maternal and child health by visiting newborn babies' homes in the communities. The interviews dealt with the recent changes in child-rearing environment, the changes of the parents' child-rearing manner, and the current state of child-rearing support. Their narratives were transcribed verbatim, and the transcripts relating to the current state of the parents engaged in child rearing were coded. Based on the similarities, the codes were grouped into subcategories, categories, and then core categories. This study was approved by the ethics committee of the institution one author belonged to (Approval Numbers 17-042 and 18-044).

【Results】The following five core categories were extracted: [parents lacking in childcare-related life experience and knowledge], [parents who can manage to do household chores and childcare in cooperation with each other], [parents who cannot manage to do household chores and childcare in cooperation with each other], [mothers not having enough social resources for childcare] and [changes in child rearing ascribable to the mothers' changing tendency].

【Conclusions】With respect to the current child rearing, the midwives pointed out the following three points.

1. Some parents cannot introduce the event of child rearing into their actual life because their life experiences are scant and their own lifestyle is unstable. Lack of life experience has been regarded as problematic from the viewpoint of youth development, and this problem has finally reached the generation raising children.

2. The way of building human relationships, for example, making mom friends and getting along with them has been changing among young mothers. In the daily life of parenting, the mothers are apt to cling to their old friends, not to try to establish new relationships.

3. The functions of the home of mother's parents have become more obscure than before. This is related to the fact that the age of childbirth has varied widely, and the home of mother's parents is far from the mother's current home in most cases.
