Purpose : To investigate the incidence of agitation, surrounding sound level and the factors related to the incidence of agitation, among persons with dementia living in the geriatric health service facilities.

Methods : Using the Progressively Lowered Stress Threshold model(PLST model), observational data were collected on the A-weighted sound pressure level and agitation of 18 participants in 4 facilities for 2 days. Presence of agitation was measured by CMAI Japanese version.

Result : Logistic regression analysis showed that variables including A-weighted sound pressure level(being higher), PM(especially 15 : 00〜17 : 59), cognitive function(being severe impairment)and hearing impairment(being mild impairment)significantly predicted the incidence of agitation. The results suggest that environmental regulation considering temporal pattern, especially level of noise, would contribute for decreasing the incidence of agitation.
