This study aimed to evaluate research support programs that have been developed by our research team to clarify the role of universities in education regarding research for clinical nurses. We administered inventory surveys at the beginning and end of the group programs. The survey collected the demographic characteristics of the nurses and assessed their understanding of both general nursing research and their independent research projects. We performed focus group interviews at the end of each group program to collect ‘their thoughts about nursing research,’ ‘the state of progress of their research,’ and ‘their thoughts after the group program.’ We found that the number of nurses with a good understanding of both general and their independent research had decreased. In general, nurses had confidence in nursing research. However, nurses expressed that by participating in group programs, they gained clarity on the process needed for their future research and they experienced repeated deadlock during research in their independent research projects. Finally, nurses had become more aware of their independent research projects. Our study clarified that participating in group programs facilitates information exchange. Thus, our research support programs enhance nurses' senses of accomplishment, desire to continue research, and ability to conduct research.
