Aim: This study was conducted to clarify the current state of disaster countermeasures at visiting nursing stations and the demand for a mutual support network for use in the event of a disaster.
Method: A self-report questionnaire survey was mailed out to the administrators of all visiting nursing stations in Niigata Prefecture. Basic statistics were calculated and data were analyzed using chi-squared testing, Fisher's exact testing and Mann-Whitney U testing to determine the relationship between the characteristics of a facility and the desire expressed to participate in a proposed mutual support network.
Results: Among the 60 facilities (62.5%) that responded, 57 (95.0%) reported the formation and upkeep of an emergency contact network among staff. However, less than half of the facilities reported contingencies for medical equipment management during a power failure. A total of 39 facilities (65.0%) indicated a desire to participate in a mutual support network. The proportion of large-scale facilities hoping for support from various institutions and indicating a wish to participate in a mutual support network was high (p<.05).
Conclusion: There is a limit to the disaster countermeasures a single facility can organize, and there is demand for the formation of a mutual support network.
