Abstract

The purpose of this study is to prove the effect of Miyajima's abdominal pressing method on the improvement of defecation.

Research subjects were twenty healthy women, 20-36 years old (average age: control group 23.1±4.6, pressure group 25.4±6.1). We compared the two groups by bowel sound wave, Japanese version constipation assessment scale (CAS), and awareness of defecation. Section analysis on bowel sound wave was performed. Sections were 0-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5 minutes after Miyajima's abdominal pressing method. Each section's data was converted into ratio in relation to the baseline data.

The result revealed that the pressure group's average amplitude was significantly lower than the control group in section 0-1 (p<0.05). Through standard deviation, the amplitude of the former group was significantly higher than the latter group in all sections (p<0.01). The area of the amplitude was significantly wider in the pressure group as compared to the control group in 0-1 (p<0.01), 2-3 and 4-5 (p<0.05). CAS of two constipated subjects in the pressure group became lower. Two subjects had defecation within 10 minutes after abdominal pressure and six within 24 hours. One subject had gas during the procedure while four had flatus within 10 minutes after and nine within 24 hours. Seven subjects were aware of the increase in intestinal peristalsis during the pressure while six observed similar sign within 10 minutes after and seven within 24 hours. Overall, eight subjects recognized the effect on defecation.

We, therefore, conclude Miyajima's abdominal pressing method has a positive effect on the improvement of defecation.
