This paper introduces a technique for constructing a cock-up splint out of corrugated cardboard and common duct tape. The advantages of making splints with corrugated cardboard include: 1) general accessibility and availability of construction materials, 2) low cost of construction materials, and 3) ease of construction. On the down side, corrugated cardboard is not as durable as other more commonly used splint materials, is difficult to shape into delicate curves due to its internal structure, and is inappropriate for splints which have the potential to become wet. These particular features of corrugated cardboard make it appropriate as a construction material for splints made by therapists as trials before making more durable splints with expensive materials, for clients who only need them for short-term application, and in home care (or emergency) settings where therapists do not have access to standard splinting equipment. The techniques for constructing a cock-up splint introduced here can be applied to other types of splints.
