The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between pulp-to-pulp distance and pinch strength. Pinch strength with five different pulp-to-pulp distances (8mm, 33mm, 53mm, 73mm, 93mm) were tested in twenty healthy adults. Significant positive correlations were found between pulp-to-pulp distances and pinch strengths.

Correlation coefficients ranged from 0.58 to 0.98 in males and 0.42 to 0.99 in females. Pinch strength with 93mm of pulp-to-pulp distance produced 35-60% higher strength than with 8mm of pulp-to-pulp distance. Our results suggest need for clinical standard method for measuring pinch strength.
