An individual activity program was administered to patients in an intervention group who underwent modified electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). This study examined the effect of this program on memory impairment and mood disorders, as well as the common side effects of ECT. Patients who received ECT were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n=13) and a control group (n=13). Scores of the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE), Miyake-style retention test, and the Inventory Scale for Mood and Sense of Fatigue (SMSF) were compared before administration of the program and 1 month after initiation of the program in both the intervention and non-intervention groups. Results of the GAF, MMSE, and Miyake-style retention tests were similar in both groups, but significantly larger differences were noted in the results of the SMSF in the intervention group. This study suggests that the individual activity program had a stabilizing effect on patients who received ECT in the intervention group.
