Abstract : WalkAide® is a sophisticated functional electrical stimulation system designed to restore mobility to patients with foot drop. The system provides asymmetrical biphasic pulses through the skin to stimulate the common peroneal nerve, triggered by an individually programmed tilt sensor, to improve toe clearance during the swing phase of gait. Two chronic stroke patients with dropped foot participated in a 14-day gait training study with the WalkAide®. At the end of the study, both patients showed improvement in their ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, their tibialis anterior muscle strength, and their gait speed while wearing the WalkAide®. Additionally, one patient experienced reduced ankle spasticity and the other improved control of knee hyperextension during gait. These results indicate that gait training with the WalkAide® can provide gait improvements in chronic stroke patients with drop foot.
