This study reports the effect of a desensitization program using musical instruments on a child with hyperacusis, whose expression was limited to crying and covering his ears in response to environmental sounds.

Because he was nonverbal and without language signs, the Intervention Program for Language Retardation based on Sign-Significate Relations (known as S-S Method) was also used. Changes were observed in the formation of basic object concepts based on object manipulation, as well as in the effect of desensitization for hyperacusis and development of object-mediated communication. As a result, his hypersensitivity to sounds was reduced and non-verbal communication, such as changes in facial expression, was improved. Use of musical instruments for alleviating hyperacusis and object-mediated communication based on S-S Method were found to be effective.
