[Purpose] Because of recent advances in laparoscopic procedures, cases of laparoscopic surgery have been reported for strangulating bowel obstruction. We examined laparoscopic surgery for strangulating bowel obstruction in our hospital. [Material and Method] During January 2009 and December 2009, 14 patients were diagnosed as having strangulating bowel obstruction and they underwent laparoscopic surgery. Results of these patients were compared with those of open surgery. [Result] There was no significant difference in operative time between the two groups. Blood loss was significantly lower, postoperative days of defecation and hospital stays were significantly shorter in the laparoscopic group. [Conclusions] Laparoscopic surgery for strangulating bowel obstruction may be considered as a useful method.
