We measured the distance between the middle hepatic vein(MHV)and the gall bladder using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)in 171 cases because we encountered a rare case in which the MHV was exposed to the gall bladder bed.

Distance could be measured in 100 cases(58.5%)on only coronal section. Measured distance ranged from 1 to 26 mm(mean 10.1 mm), 3 cases(3%)were the less than 2 mm . In other reports, it was measured by color Doppler ultrasound or contrast enhanced CT, so our report using MRI was thought to be the first.

MRI shows a poor success rate at measurement of distance, but enhancement and special technique are not necessary. This method was thought to be effective because objective and retrospective examination could be done.
