Mottling skin (mottled skin) is defined as mottled skin coloration and appears due to impaired circulation of the skin. Mottling skin is a finding suggestive of a microcirculatory disturbance in critically ill patients or in septic shock. The mottling score is a score of the extent of mottling. It is expected to be a simple, non-invasive tool for assessing microcirculatory disturbances at the bedside. In patients with septic shock, changes in the mottling score can be used to predict patient prognosis. In this article, we will outline the pathophysiology of mottling skin and discuss the clinical application of the mottling score.
