  • Look Inside

Effects of ouabain on the active Na transport through frog skins were investigated.

 The following results were obtained.

 (a) The inhibitory effects of ouabain on the short-circuit current of frog skin were practically irreversible.

 (b) In potassium-rich media, the effectiveness of ouabain was decreased.

 (c) After active Na transport had been inhibited by the drug, there could not he found any evidence which indiates that the Na-carrier still existed or was functioning.

 (d) There was presented evidence indicating that the conductance of the frog skin depends on the active Na transport process as well as on the passive diffusion of ions. The possible mechanism of this active transport which produces the positive electrical conductance was discussed.
