This study evaluates the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) for people with mood disorders and anxiety disorders. CDSMP is a self-management program developed at Stanford University. Previous studies have reported that CDSMP improves a patient's-and the patient's family's-sense of self-efficacy and improves the self-management behaviors of patients with a chronic disorder. Thirty-one out-patients with mental disorders were treated in the CDSMP group. Thirty-four out-patients with similar disorders were in the comparative group and did not participate on CDSMP. All consented to be a part of this study. The study was conducted using eleven sets of questionnaires (including health status assessment, self-management behavior, and hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). The surveys were given before CDSMP was begun, immediately after the completion of CDSMP and three weeks after the end of the program. Results showed that those involved in CDSMP demonstrated significant changes in health status assessment, pain, ability to perform physical exercise, feelings of self efficacy, and the ability to cope with stress. This indicates that CDSMP is useful for patients with mental disorders as suggested in previous reports. To confirm the universal effectiveness of CDSMP it is necessary to increase the number of subjects in study programs, to set the control group and to continue to monitor the results of these programs.
