  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the bed bath as a skin cleansing method. Eight healthy females were included in the study. Physiological function, skin temperature, skin pH value, amount of skin sebum, and self assessment data before and after cleansing were compared. The surface and deep temperatures of the thumb and great toe demonstrated changes following the bed bath cleansing procedure. Post-bed bath temperatures were significantly higher than pre-bed bath temperatures. The duration of the bed bath was approximately 30 minutes and no complaints of cold sensation were reported. The bed bath cleansing method prevented incremental increases of skin pH, and the reduction of sebum ranged from 29.9 % to 67.6 %. However, immediately after beginning the bed bath, increased activity of the parasympathetic system was observed. Following the procedure, parasympathetic activity had increased by a factor of 2.33. These results suggest that bed bath cleansing is an effective and useful method in clinical care.
