This qualitative descriptive research study was conducted for the purpose of exploring specialized practical knowledge and skills provided by expert critical care nurses using a phenomenological approach. Six expert critical care nurses in two university hospitals in the Tokyo metropolitan area participated in the study. Participant observation and unstructured interviews were conducted and data were collected for five months. From this data, expert critical care nurses used five particular practical knowledge and skills. First, the technique, learned through experience, of assessing a patientユs current condition by evaluating his/her response and reading the body language. Second, the ability to communicate effectively with a patient without discouraging while assessing his/her current condition and long-term prognosis. Third, the ability to discuss a patientユs clinical situation with the patient and his/her family by providing comprehensive explanations of the current situation and possible outcomes. Fourth, being empathic towards a patient and his/her family by attempting to see things from their perspective. Last, establishment of a professional relationship with a patient by determining his/her possible needs and working towards meeting those needs.

These findings indicate that the previous experiences of expert critical care nurses influence their specialized practical knowledge and skills.
