Nurses have important roles in psychiatric inpatient care for children and adolescents, and their care can affect every facet of the patient's life. However, research on nursing practice in child or adolescent psychiatric wards has been limited. This paper reports the findings of a study of the child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient care provided by expert nurses. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 expert nurses in 2008. Collected data were analyzed using a constant comparative method, and “nursing intervention to solve children's problems” was identified as the core category. This core category was substantiated by the following three interrelated stages ; (1) ‘dealing with problematic behavior’ ; (2) ‘understanding root and substantive problems’ ; and (3) ‘addressing root and substantive problems’. Child or adolescent psychiatric inpatient care provided by expert nurses was conducted in a gradual process, and was influenced by the quality of the child-nurse relationship. ‘Addressing root and substantive problems’ requires a high quality child-nurse relationship. The care provided by expert nurses reported in the present study can help novice nurses learn how to provide effective psychiatric inpatient care for children and adolescents.
