  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Since the introduction of succinylcholine as a short-acting muscle relaxant*1 in 1949, there have been numerous reports of patients, apparently good surgical risks*2, who have experienced prolonged apnea after receiving the drug. Further complications*3, including respiratory failure, cardiovascular collapse, and death, have also been reported. The relationship between increased sensitivity to succinylcholine and decreased levels of serum cholinesterase, or pseudocholinesterase, was established in the 1950 s, and an atypical form of the enzyme was described.
