Parathyroid hormone, vitamin D and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) are pivotal players in the regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Their target tissues are renal tubulus, small intestine and bone. Based on a common endocrinological theory, these hormones and target tissues constitute a fine negative feedback system that maintains calcium and phosphorus homeostasis. Precise molecular mechanisms by which each hormone physiologically regulates calcium and phosphorus remain to be elucidated, although many investigators are rigorously exploring them.
