Protein S is a vitamin K-dependent plasma anticoagulant protein, and is mainly synthesized in the liver and vascular endothelial cells. Protein S functions as a cofactor for activated protein C (APC) which inactivates coagulation cofactors, factor Ⅴa and factor VIIIa. In human plasma, protein S circulates in a free form and complex form with C4b-binding protein (C4BP), and only free form protein S has an APC cofactor activity. Recently, protein S has several functions in addition to the cofactor activity for APC.
