4) マラリア

Malaria

マラリアは熱帯・亜熱帯地域を中心に流行し，その犠牲者は年間100～300万人にのぼる．このため，抜本的な対策としてマラリアワクチンの開発に期待が寄せられている．しかしながら，これまでにマラリアワクチンの実現に向けた多大な努力がなされてきたにもかかわらず，いまだ著効を示すワクチンの実用化のめどは立っていない．本稿ではマラリアワクチンの実現の可能性とともに，筆者らが発見したマラリア原虫のアキレス腱と考えられる，SERA5抗原から開発したSE36マラリアワクチンの効果の予測と臨床試験の現状について解説する．

Malaria is one of the most serious infectious diseases in tropical and subtropical areas and the toll is 1～3 million deaths per year.　Therefore, a promising malaria vaccine is desired as a radical measures.　However, an effective malaria vaccine has not yet been realized and remains an elusive goal despite tremendous scientific effort.　Here, we review the possibility of realization of malaria vaccines and recent clinical trials of candidate vaccines including our SE36 malaria vaccine which is developed from SERA5 antigen and which is expected to be the Achilles' heel of falciparum malaria.
