Cell surface markers of 14 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck, especially of Waldeyer's ring origin, were studied with various surface markers, especially by using anti-human B lymphocyte serum (ABS) and anti-human T lymphocyte serum (ATS), which were rendered specific for human B lymphocytes and human peripheral T lymphocytes respectively.

An immunofluorescent study with ABS and ATS enabled us to demonstrate the histologic localization of normal or neoplastic B and T cells in preserving the original structure of tumor tissues.

The proportion of cell types in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was B cell type 71% and T cell type 29%. The relationships among cell types, clinical characteristics, and histologic findings were also investigated. Patients with B-lymphoma showed good response to radiation and chemotherapy, and were associated with good prognosis. On the other hand, patients with T-lymphoma were associated with poor prognosis and 3 of 4 patients were died within 8 months after diagnosis. B-lymphomas of diffuse type were found to be morphologically heterologous, whereas the histology of T-lymphomas was relatively uniform, i.e., in 3 of 4 cases tumor cells showed the highly pleomorphic features of nucleus.
