Thirty children (51 ears) aged 4 to 15 years with otitis media with effusion (OME) were recieved insertion of ventilating tubes (VT) through the eardrum. The hearing loss (average of frequencies 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz) was 28.1±9.7 dB and 12.7 ± 8.5dB before and after the operation respectively. The insertion of VT improved their hearing significantly (p < 0.005). The hearing loss was followed after the extrusion of VT in 25 ears. The follow-up period ranged from less than one month to 12 months. The average hearing loss was 13.11 ± 8.7dB. This value was significantly lower than that before the operation (p<0.005) and was not significantly different compared with that after the operation.

The longevity of two types of VT ; Koken TD tube, and Paparella type 2 tube, was studied. Paparella tube was found to function for longer periods than Koken tube. The Paparella tube seems to be more useful than Koken tube for the treatment of OME in children.
