  • Look Inside

The presence of cholinergic nerves in the nasal mucosa has been verified by histochemical and electron-microscopic studies. In this study the nasal symptoms of 10 myasthenia gravis patients, who had been treated with anticholinesterase therapy, were observed. After administration of the drug, 3 out of 10 patients complained of watery rhinorrhea and one of these patients presented a nasal obstruction.

Nasal symptoms may result from anticholinesterase administration. These symptoms are probably provoked by a muscarine-like effect on the target cells of the autonomic nerve. Seven patients presented no nasal symptoms and this probably resulted from a differential pharmacological anticholinesterase effect on the neuromuscular junction rather than on the target cells of the autonomic nerve.
