The maturation of the organ of Corti and stria vascularis in rabbits, mice, minks and human fetus was studied by phase contrast and electron microscopy.

The hair cells differentiate before their nerve endings make synaptic contact in the organ of Corti. The hair cells, supporting cells and afferent nerve endings can be identified at birth. The efferent nerve endings can be found about 2 weeks after birth in animals. The cochlea of the human fetus 6 months old showed a similar pattern as the cochlea of the new born animal.

At a later stage in the human fetus the large spiral vessel could be identified beneath the tunnel of Corti. However, these vessels undergo involution and some of them lose their lumen in reaching adulthood.

By means of electron microscopy the evolution of the stria vascularis beginning from a single layer of cuboidal ectodermal cells to reach a composite epithelium of several layers of three different kinds of cells could be readily discernible.
