  • Look Inside

Mastoidoplasty as a procedure was devised for the purpose of obviating and preventing epidermization difficulties that may arise after a radical matoidectomy. Goto recommends the use of pedicled temporal muscle and periosteal flaps in the construction of the new external canal, which he bases this procedure on his pneumatization theory.

The authors performed 44 cases of radical mastoidectomy by this procedure and the results were as follow:

 1) In 26 cases the posterior meatal wall was found to be well formed.

 2) In 10 cases the wall was found sunken towards the mastoid cavity.

 3) In 8 cases the attempt was a failure, the walls were found to be dropped into the mastoid cavity.
