Sasaki points out the diagnostic significance of the method by which hearing recruitment in infants may be directly observed by the exa-miner. The criterion of the test is observation of pupillary reaction in a sleeping infant as the hearing test is conducted.

1. The infant is put to sleep by intramuscular administration of 3mg/kg of mintal. The presence or abscence of recruitment is directly observed by watching the pupillary reaction in the sleeping infant elicited by the threshold hearing test.

2. The optimum time of conducting the test is at the initial period of the induced sleep before becoming too deeply involved; the results obtained in the later part of the sleep when the infant is about to wake the pupillary reaction seemed to become disturbed and distorted.

3. Under this condition the presence of recruitment may be considered as to be positive when difference between threshold of sleeping pupillary reaction and the conscious threshold is below 30db and,to be negative when this value exceeds 40db.
