It was my great pleasure and honour to serve as the President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) for its 79th Annual Meeting in Denver April 9 ― 13th,2011. The AANS is the largest single country organization for neurosurgeons in the world. Its membership is now over 8,000 neurosurgeons in the various categories. In addition, the AANS prides itself with offering numerous important benefits to members including the Journal of Neurosurgery, the journal of record for academic neurosurgery in the world, defense by the Professional Conduct Committee for neurosurgeons who are charged with egregious lawsuits from testimony by other AANS neurosurgeon members, numerous on-line education offerings, and a superb annual meeting which presents the latest and most significant findings in neurosurgery to the fore each year.

The Annual Meeting of the AANS in Denver was a very special meeting for me for a number of reasons. For one,I was so pleased to organize a special AANS-Kenichiro Sugita International Symposium with the help of Professors Toshihiko Wakabayashi,Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Nagoya University, and Kazuhiro Hongo,Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Shinshu University (Fig. 1). Professor Sugita was one of my most important mentors in neurosurgery (Fig. 2). I learned so much from him about the art and discipline of microneurosurgery. Many of the technique he espoused regarding operative neurosurgery I use to this day in my own practice of neurosurgery. In fact,I still refer to Professor Sugita's wonderfully illustrated atlas on microneurosurgical anatomy and operative cases whenever I am about to perform a complex procedure 2). I had the great privilege of watching a canvas come to life as he painted the details of the clipping of a complex middle cerebral artery aneurysm immediately after the case. Another very important reason why the Denver meeting was so important to me was the awarding of the AANS International Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor Shigeaki Kobayashi (Fig. 3),Professor Sugita's associate at Shinshu University.
