  • Look Inside

The basic mechanism leading to the induction of epileptic seizures was discussed on the basis of studies of "acute kindling" proposed by us. We found that the progressive changes in epileptiform discharges similar to kindling at about a 24-h stimulus interval in chronic experiments could be induced in a brief time span in acutely prepared rabbits by repeated stimulations at a 3-min interval to the unilateral visual cortex. We termed such phenomena under acute conditions "acute kindling" and proposed that the acute kindling might be useful for fine microelectrode analysis of kindling. In the acute kindling, as a result of the progressive changes, interictal or ictal epileptiform discharges were spontaneously induced in the stimulated sites (kindled sites) during the stimulus intervals and further, independent epileptiform discharges (IDs) having an autonomous epileptogenicity were estab-lished in the other cortical areas (propagated sites). So, we consider that studying serial changes of neuronal activities during the stimulus intervals in the kindled or propagated sites in the acute kin-dling may associate with the study of the basic mechanism of epileptogenicity.
