  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Since it is one of the best-characterized pathways, the septo-hippocampal projection has been a fa-vourite system for studying mechanisms involved in neural regeneration using grafting techniques. Solid and suspension transplants of embryonic septal tissue reinnervate denervated adult rat hip-pocampus. Recent experiments using suspensions of dissociated cultured septal cells of varying em-bryonic and postnatal ages have provided addi-tional evidence that cultured embryonic septal cells can reinnervate lesioned hippocampus. Interfacing a step of in vitro culture of neural cells before their transplantation to a host brain provides the oppor-tunity for experimentally manipulating their viabil-ity and growth, as well as for labeling them for their in vivo identification.
