  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Recent development of the tachykinin studies was reviewd especially on two new members of mammalian tachykinins and their receptors. The recent isolation of neurokinin A and B, the new brothers of substance P, suggests strongly that the possible existence of multiple receptor subtype for substance P and neurokinins. Classical pharma-cological studies and receptor binding studiesusing the radio rabelled substance P, neurokinin A and eledoisin showed that each tachykinin binds to different sites with different affinity in brain and peripheral tissues. Furthermore, studies of the three tachykinins and their receptors revealed that there was not a close relation or match between the distribution of receptors and the distribution of related tachykinins. This mis-match problem suggests that the signal transduc-tion between two cells is controlled not only by the release of the neurotransmitter (s) but also by the existence of the receptor(s). The biochemical events after the binding of the tachykinins to their receptors, for example, 2nd messenger production and the degradation process of the tachykinins, are also reviewed.
