Abstract

Since the electrical responses to sound stimuli were first recorded from the cat's cochlea about an half century has been gone. A huge bulk of experiment on cochlear responses was carried outand the variable resistance microphone theory was proposed by Davis. The exact transducer mechanism of hair cells, however, still remains to be elucidated. Recently the intracellular potentials of the inner and outer hair cells in the guinea pig's cochlea were identified with a marking tech-nique. Electrical properties of the hair cell membrane were investigated in the amphibia and reptile.
