漢字仮名問題と大脳半球の左右差

I．背　景

　1．病理脳からの方向

　「漢字，仮名問題と大脳半球の左右差」という特殊な問題に入る前に，その背景である大脳半球のlateralityそのものについての，最近の動向を視野に収めておく必要があろう。

　大脳両半球の機能に左右差があるのはBroca以来神経学では常識となっていたが，左右差の心理生理学的な本態についての研究が大規模に展開し始めたのは1962年のGeschwindら^7）およびGazzanigaら^5）の脳梁損傷例についての，きわめて系統的な研究からであるといえよう。中でもCaliforniaグループを中心とするsplit brainの仕事は目覚ましいものがある。ここではその仕事から導き出されたいくつかの結論を紹介しておきたい。

Abstract

There seems to be no doubt that the left hemisphere can process written material quite efficiently regardless of the nature of characters.

Role of the right hemisphere in decoding Kanji and Kana characters can be surmised from the experience of typical pure alexia which is supposed to have an intact but isolated right occipital lobe. Data from Japanese literature on this condition implicates a possible, albeit small role of the right hemisphere in reading Kanji words.
