The asymmetric cell division, a basic process to create cell diversity, plays crucial roles in neural development in which a large number of neurons with distinct fates arise from a smaller number of neural stem cells. In this review, I focus on the roles of asymmetric divisions in Drosophila neural development.

In the developing central nervous system, neural stem cells called neuroblasts divide to produce a chain of sister cells, ganglion mother cells (GMC), that divide once into a pair of neurons or glia.
