Cytokines in viral encephalitis and meningitis

サイトカインは免疫，炎症，造血において重要な細胞間情報伝達を担っている。サイトカインは局所で産生され，局所で作用することから中枢神経系感染症では髄液中のサイトカインの動態が局所の免疫・炎症病態を反映していると考えられる。近年，ウイルス性脳炎・髄膜炎でのサイトカイン，サイトカインレセプターおよびサイトカインインヒビターの報告がみられ，炎症病態や神経学的予後との関連が示されている。本稿ではそれらの報告に筆者らの成績を加えて解説する。

Cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases of the central nervous system. Cytokines are produced in the local tissue and act in the local site. Regarding the pathogenesis of infectious diseases of the central nervous system, it is important to investigate cytokine levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Recently, many papers about cytokines in viral encephalitis and meningitis have been reported. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is often elevated in CSF from patients with viral encephalitis.
