  • Look Inside

Activity-dependent synaptic modifications such as long-term potentiation (LIP) and long-term depression (LTD) are thought to be a cellular basis of learning and memory. Postsynaptic Ca2+ increase due to the activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) type glutamate receptors has been thought of as an essential step triggering the LTP and LTD in hippocampus and cerebral cortex. However, recent studies have demonstrated that multiple types of voltage-dependent calcium channels could also contribute to the initiation of LTP and LTD.
