大脳辺縁系―ヒトと動物における意義

The limbic system: Its roles in animals and humans

はじめに

　大脳辺縁系（辺縁系）は，1878年にBrocaが哺乳類の脳に共通にみられる脳幹の頭端部を環状にとりまく皮質領域を大辺縁葉（le grand lobe limbique）と呼んだことに由来する^1）。その後，Papez^2）およびMacLean^3）は，これらの領域を，それぞれ辺縁葉（limbic lobe）および辺縁系（limbic system）と名づけた。辺縁系の解剖学的定義は，研究者により異なるが，側脳室および第3脳室の吻側の周囲，すなわち，前脳梁下溝，帯状溝，頭頂下溝，鳥距溝，側副溝および嗅脳溝によって囲まれた大脳皮質，およびこれらの領域と解剖学的にも機能的にも密接な関係にある皮質下領域からなる（図1）。また，機能的には，辺縁系は，大脳の新皮質から間脳へ至る階層構造の中間に位置し，ヒトや動物が環境の変化に応じて臨機応変に生きていくことに不可欠な情動，記憶，本能，内分泌および自律機能の統合を行っている。

The limbic system, including the amygdala and hippocampal formation, has been implicated in a variety of emotional as well as mnemonic and cognitive processes. Both the amygdala and hippocampal formation receive highly integrated sensory information from cortical sensory systems, and send these information, directly or indirectly, to the hypothalamus which is essential in emotional expression.
