  • Look Inside

Involvement of biological clock in the occurrence of sleep is now well established in humans. However, the human sleep-wakefulness rhythm shows many different features from that in other mammals. For example, the sleep-wakefulness rhythm is desynchronized from other circadian rhythms such as in rectal temperature and plasma melatonin, and shows a circabidian period (about two days) under free run conditions. Based on these findings, a multi-oscillatory hypothesis has been advanced for the human circadian clock.
