  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

To examine how properties of nerve cells are changed by aging, dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and sympathetic ganglia (SG) dissected from aged mammals (rats, mice, suncus, rabbits and human beings) are cultured in a chemically defined medium. Survival, growth of neurites, and membrane properties of the nerve cells from aged animals were then compared to those of young ones. DRG cells from aged rats and mice were difficult to be kept live in monolayer culture: number of live nerve cells from aged animals in culture was less than 1/4 of those from young adult ones.
