Yokukansan was used in the treatment of idiopathic blepharospasm in 47 cases. Yokukansan is a Chinese herb medicine and is claimed to be effective for neurosis, insomnia and menopausal syndrome. The series comprised 14 males and 33 females. The clinical features, including difficulty in lid opening, were mild. There was no case of corneal lesions. Yokukansan was given at the daily dosis of 7.5g in 40 cases and of 5g in 7 cases. Subjective sysmptoms improved in 45 cases after 3 to 7 days of treatment. Associated insomnia or neurosis improved also. Mild anorexia in 3 cases was the sole side effect. Blepharospasm appeared to be related to menopausal syndrome, because 26 cases in the series were females aged 40 years or over. The findings show that yokukansan may be effective for idiopathic mild blepharospasm.
