We evaluated the serological antibodies in 30 patients with ophthalmic herpes zoster and in 46 normal controls. We paid particular attention of IgG antibodies to varicella-zoster virus (VZV) by fluorescent antibody technique and complement fixation titers.

Control subjects invariably showed low antibody titers of less than 1:4 by complement fixation and 1:40 by fluorescent antibody technique. In patients with herpes zoster, the titers of IgG antibodies to VZV by fluorescent antibody technique incrased during the 3rd and 4th week to gradually decrease thereafter. High titers of more than 1:80 were maintained for 9 months at least. The titers of IgG antibodies were positively correlated with those by complement fixation technique (r:75).

There seemed to be a high possibility of VZV infection if the titer of IgG antibodies to VZV by fluorescent antibody technique. This test appeared to be useful regardless of availability of paired sera.
