  • Look Inside

Five babies developed acute conjunctivitis 4 to 7 days after birth. Pseudomembrane formed in 4 cases. All the cases were treated with topical antibi-otics. Respiratory symptoms developed 2 to 29 days after onset of conjunctivitis in the form of persist-ent cough, sneeze and nasal discharge. Chest roent-genogram showed pulmonary involvement in 2cases. Eosinophilia was present in 2. Serum IgM antibody to Chlamydia trachomatis was positive in all the 3 cases with pulmonary affection and/or esosinophilia. In the other 2 cases with normal laboratory or roentgenographic findings, nasophar-yngeal infection with C. trachomatis was suspected.

Antigens for C. trachomatis were detected from the cervix in one of 3 mothers tested. IgG antibody to C. trachomatis was positive in the serum of 4 mothers.

Infants with inclusion conjunctivitis are liable to develop pneumonia or nasopharyngitis due to C. trachomatis when treated with topical antibiotics alone.
