As primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) increases with age, surgery for POAG will have to be designed with due consideration to cataract surgery at a later stage.

We performed cataract surgery with posterior chamber lens implantation in 45 eyes which had undergone glaucoma surgery before. These eyes were divided into 3 groups.

In 4 eyes, group A, filtering procedure by thermal sclerostomy of Scheie had been performed before. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was wellmaintained. Cataract surgery was difficult to perform due to serious iris damage and posterior synechia.

Trabeculotectomy had been performed before in 7 eyes, group B. The eyes were in less damaged state than in group A. Flattening of filtering blebs and poor IOP control resulted after cataract surgery.

Trabeculotomy had been performed in 34 eyes. Cataract surgery was much easier to perform than in group A or B with good postoperative control of IOP.
