Abstract Purpose:To report a case of uveal effusion syndrome(UES)without nanophthalmos in which vitrectomy alone resulted in retinal reattachment without recurrence.

Case report:A 72-year-old woman presented with a 1-week history of impaired vision in the right eye. She had undergone bilateral trabeculectomy 2 years earlier for glaucoma associated with angle dysplasia. Corrected visual acuity was 0.07 in the right eye. The right eye showed bullous retinal detachment in the inferior region with macular detachment and a nasal choroidal detachment. The right eye was diagnosed with UES, and received vitrectomy. Due to the presence of glaucoma, sclerectomy was not performed to preserve the conjunctiva. The retina was successfully reattached following the vitrectomy, and no recurrence was observed for more than 1 year. On final examination, corrected visual acuity was 0.6 in the right eye.

Conclusion:Vitrectomy can be a treatment option for patients with UES who do not have nanophthalmos and have reasons to avoid sclerectomy.
