We evaluated the vitreous condition by means of biomicroscopy in 425 eyes of 334 patients with floaters as chief complaint. Cases with hemorrhagic or inflammatory lesions were excluded in the study.

1. Females outnumbered males by 2 : 1. The complaint was more prevalent in the right eye (58%) than in the left (42%).

2. Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) was present in 72% of the eyes. The incidence of PVD over 50 years of age (87%) was significantly higher than under 50 years (21%).

3. In eyes with PVD, glial plaques on the posterior hyaloid membrane were the main cause of subjective floaters.
